Reviews / Xtreme SL Pro - PC Advisor

-

What a brute of a laptop the Rock Xtreme SL Pro is - taking up a large portion of our desktop space.

The Rock Xtreme SL Pro·s 20in screen is a joy to behold. It displays video and graphics at a sharp quality with vibrant colours and good contrast. If you want specifically a laptop capable of watching movies or playing games at giant proportions, this laptop does the job with the help of two 512MB GeForce Go 7950 GTX cards.

Unfortunately, the Rock Xtreme SL Pro heats up quickly, especially the area in front of the trackpad, which can be uncomfortable in use. There is also a lot of unused space in front of the keyboard making it quite awkward to reach to type. And on the model we tested, the power supply was problematic to plug in and lost connection occasionally.

With five USB ports, the Rock Xtreme SL Pro offers enough connectivity options for your external devices alongside Bluetooth capability and support for wireless a, b and g networks. It also looks more impressive when open than the Darth Vader-like Alienware.

The Rock Xtreme SL Pro’s metallic inner and outer casing complement the black keyboard and it features sophisticated looking speakers, which are made a focal point above the keyboard rather than blended into the design. The audio quality is also exceptional thanks to the 5.1 surround sound and subwoofer. The Rock Xtreme SL Pro sounds perfect for home entertainment and gaming.

Its specifications are as you would expect from a laptop primarily intended as a replacement for a desktop PC, mainly aimed at gamers. The Rock Xtreme SL Pro has a 2GHz processor and 2GB of memory. Better than expected are the two 160GB hard disks, which will be plenty for storing all your files. Quick access buttons also feature, situated beside the speakers for actions such as launching web and email applications and activating Bluetooth.

The Rock is a full-featured multimedia and gaming notebook, with the inclusion of a webcam. A TV tuner is available as an optional extra.

Verdict
The Rock Xtreme SL Pro would be a capable replacement for your desktop PC, even though it·s quite bulky. Its size and weight, which nears 7kg, mean that it·s not a notebook you can pop in your laptop bag or balance on your lap. We don’t have too many negative comments about the Rock SL Pro, though, apart from the power supply issues we had, and the price. It looks sleek and is well featured, but is one of the most expensive power laptops around.
